Happy New Year! Now don't waste it, y'hear me!

Aaaah, the sweet smell of a new year! A fresh beginning. Well, sort of – you never get to start over with your finances. There’s always a legacy up to, erm, yesterday. But pretend. This is a time of the year where, over a cold lager or a chilled chardonnay, you can make plans for how this year is going to be so different, better, more rewarding than the year that just ended.

Not that there was too much wrong with 2011 from Australia’s perspective. Things seemed to be going pretty much okay. Unemployment was low, inflation was causing no problems, company profits seemed pretty strong, particularly those blasted banks
